What's happening on June 16

NHS Supply Chain ran a competitive tender for chlorine disinfection products in 2025. Eighteen suppliers entered. Only two were selected. Guest Medical is one of them.

From June 16, 2026, Guest Medical's CHLOR-CLEAN and HAZ-TAB will remain available through the NHS Supply Chain catalogue at Alfreton and Maidstone.

If your trust is supplied by any other Distribution Centre, your usual chlorine disinfection products will no longer appear in your catalogue - unless you arrange direct supply from Guest Medical.

This is an NHS Supply Chain decision. The products themselves are not changing.

The real question isn't whether you can afford to stay. It's whether you can afford to leave.

You're probably wondering

Three concerns we hear from IPC leads and procurement teams every week.

Direct supply concerns

"Is switching to direct supply going to create more problems than it solves?"

It probably feels like yet another procurement headache. It isn't. Direct supply means you keep the same product, the same protocols, the same training. The only thing that changes is where you place the order.

One email instead of your usual catalogue.

Change fatigue

"This feels like just another change in a year that's already had too many."

That's exactly why this page exists. The real change happens if you don't act: a different product arrives on your ward, and that's when the disruption starts.

Direct supply is how you avoid the change.

Pricing concerns

"At least switching might save us money?"

CHLOR-CLEAN and HAZ-TAB are among the lowest-priced chlorine disinfection products on the market. The hidden costs of switching - £15K-£40K+ in training, SOPs, and transition risk - dwarf any product cost difference.

But here's the part that catches most trusts off guard: the replacement product frequently costs more per unit, not less. You spend a fortune to switch - and then pay more.

The real question isn't whether you can afford to stay.
It's whether you can afford to leave.

If you do nothing before June 16

Unless your DC is Alfreton or Maidstone, your trust will automatically receive a different product.

If you do nothing

More expensive per unit

The replacement product costs more than CHLOR-CLEAN direct. Middleman margin on a product your staff didn't choose.

Unknown product on the ward

No warning. No consultation.

Full retraining required

Every ward. Every shift. 40+ hours IPC time per trust.

Every SOP rewritten

Dilution rates. COSHH. Every document re-signed.

Compliance gap

Staff unsure. Infection risk elevated.

Switching cost

£15K-£40K+

You are about to spend £15K-£40K to switch to a product that costs 10-15% more per unit than CHLOR-CLEAN direct. Staff don't trust it. Is that really the plan?

If you set up direct supply

10-15% cheaper per unit

Direct from Guest Medical. No distributor. Manufacturer price.

Same product on the ward

No surprises. No changes.

Zero retraining

Not a single shift. Not a single ward.

No SOP changes

Nothing to update. Nothing to audit.

No transition risk

No confusion. No compliance gap.

No switching costs

Nothing is switching. Same product. Direct.

Same product. 10-15% lower price. One email. Clinical training included. Get my free impact report

What switching actually looks like

Tuesday morning. Ward 7B. A nurse opens the supply cupboard and finds a product she has never seen before. The dilution rate is different. The contact time is different. She calls the IPC lead. The IPC lead has not been briefed either.

Four months later, the SOPs are still being rewritten. A near-miss has been logged. And the invoice for the new product is 10-15% higher per unit than if you had simply bought direct from Guest Medical in the first place.

£15,000 - £40,000+ in switching costs.

Retrain every ward. Rewrite every protocol.
Manage months of transition risk.

£15,000-£40,000 spent. Months of upheaval.
A product that is 10-15% more expensive.
Is that really where this is meant to end?

Or send one email to Guest Medical. Pay 10-15% less. Change nothing. Get my free impact report

Your staff know these products.

The protocols are written. The training is done.

The dilution rates are memorised. The system works.

CHLOR-CLEAN H8950J
HAZ-TAB 4.5g H8801
HAZ-TAB 2.5g H8811
HAZ-TAB 1.7g H8818
HAZ-TAB 0.5g H8875

That's not something you replace with a purchase order.

Keep the product. Keep the protocols. Keep the confidence.

The bottom line

Same product. Same protocols. Same staff.
Lower price. Zero disruption.

"We switched to direct supply in March. The process took one email and five minutes. Our staff noticed no difference - same product, same protocols. The only change was a lower invoice."

Senior Procurement Manager, Acute NHS Trust, South East England

"When we heard about the framework changes, our first concern was retraining 400 staff. Direct supply from Guest Medical meant we didn't have to retrain anyone. Not one shift."

Common questions

Are CHLOR-CLEAN and HAZ-TAB being discontinued?
No. CHLOR-CLEAN and HAZ-TAB continue to be manufactured by Guest Medical. The products are unchanged. What is changing is the NHS Supply Chain framework: from June 16, CHLOR-CLEAN and HAZ-TAB will remain available through the catalogue only at Alfreton and Maidstone Distribution Centres. Trusts supplied by all other DCs will need to order direct from Guest Medical to continue receiving the same products.
Is direct supply the same price as NHS Supply Chain?
Direct supply pricing is competitive with NHS Supply Chain framework pricing. When you factor in the complimentary clinical training, protocol support, and direct manufacturer relationship, most trusts find it better value than catalogue ordering.
Do I need to retrain staff if I switch to direct supply?
No. Direct supply means the same product arrives on your ward. CHLOR-CLEAN and HAZ-TAB are identical whether ordered through NHS Supply Chain or directly from Guest Medical. No retraining, no SOP changes, no new dilution rates.
